Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso on Wednesday urged builders to support the city’s robust housing agenda, as he vowed the efficient use of public funds.

“I will spend efficiently, I will collect effectively. ‘Pag kinolekta ang piso, piso ang resibo mo.”

Domagoso gave the assurance as he sought the backing of the real estate sector for Manila’s in-city housing program.

Speaking before members of the Chamber of Real Estate & Builders’ Associations Inc. (CREBA), Domagoso underscored his administration’s commitment to prudent spending, honest tax collection and sustained support for housing projects that directly benefit city residents.

The mayor stressed that housing remains a central pillar of his Minimum Basic Needs governance agenda, alongside healthcare, education and jobs.

He told CREBA officers and members during their membership meeting that they represent “an economic driver industry,” emphasizing the sector’s role in long-term urban development.

“Reconstruction is one of the major stimulants of any country for that matter, that includes a private and a national government investment plan.”

Drawing from personal experience, Domagoso recalled growing up amid housing insecurity in Tondo and said he understands the uncertainty faced by families without stable shelter.

“Nauunawaan po natin ang mindset ng isang squatter na pamilya. Dahil alam ko ho ang experience, ano ang nararamdaman na pakiramdam ng isang taong walang kasiguruhan sa kanyang panirahan,” he said.

That lived experience, he added, shaped his decision to prioritize permanent, structurally sound in-city housing projects instead of relocation programs far from jobs and basic services.

He also outlined the rationale behind the city’s vertical housing model, including the Tondominium and Binondominium projects.

“Ayaw kong magtatag ng bahay ng kalapati. Tutal mamumuhunan ka rin lang naman at ititira mo yung pamilya, hindi naman individual,” Domagoso said, noting the Singapore-inspired design and minimum 40-plus square meter units with two bedrooms.
