The Zamboanga Valientes delivered a masterful performance as they shocked San Beda University 83-76, in the 4th Gov. Ann K. Hofer Open Invitational Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the Cultural and Sports Center in Ipil town in Zamboanga.
Former Philippine Basketball Association standout Vic Manuel banked on his experience as he knocked down two crucial three-pointers to halt the newly-crowned National Collegiate Athletic Association champions’ surge and lead the Valientes to the thrilling victory in front of a capacity crowd.
Manuel posted 18 points while another former professional cager, Allyn Bulanadi, chipped in 15 markers to support the 12 and eight markers of homegrown stars Mike Tolomia and Denver Cadiz.
Former University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Most Valuable Player Malick Diouf was also impressive, posting 12 markers while Barkley Ebona lodged eight points for the more experienced Valientes, who erected an 11-point advantage at the half and maintained a double-digit lead through the third period and into the early fourth quarter.
The Red Lions, living up to their championship pedigree, mounted a late rally, applying relentless pressure and timely baskets to trim the gap to four points but the boys of Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe and Councilor Junnie Navarro hung tough to preserve the victory.
Next up for the Valientes, who represented the country in last month’s Dubai International Invitational Basketball Championship, are the De La Salle University Green Archers, the reigning UAAP champions.
