A fire fueled by an unattended candle destroyed approximately 30 homes and displaced 50 families in a residential neighborhood here late Saturday night, local officials said.

The blaze broke out on San Gregorio Street in Barangay Gen. T. de Leon on 7 February. The Bureau of Fire Protection raised the fire to a second alarm as crews and volunteers struggled to navigate the area’s narrow alleys.

Large fire tankers were forced to reverse to allow smaller trucks access to the burning structures, which were mostly made of wood and plywood.

Romer dela Cruz, chief of the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said initial reports indicate the fire began after a resident left a candle burning, which then ignited a piece of fabric.

Fire officials are currently verifying that claim.

Authorities reported no fatalities, though two men, ages 25 and 32, were treated for minor burns and abrasions.

Among those affected was Edgardo Robite, a truck driver who managed to rescue his children and his motorcycle but lost the family dog and his driver’s license in the flames. Robite issued a plea for assistance, noting that he cannot return to work without his professional credentials.

The fire was declared under control at 12:19 a.m. Sunday and was completely extinguished by 1 a.m. Displaced residents are currently taking shelter at the local barangay hall.

Fire investigators are still assessing the total cost of property damage.
