SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP), a joint venture of Aboitiz Power Corp. and Scatec, is moving straight into construction mode on two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Benguet after securing funding—accelerating its push to scale up energy storage and strengthen grid support services.
In a stock exchange disclosure on Wednesday, AboitizPower said the projects cover a 40-megawatt (MW) BESS at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant (Phase 2) and another 40-MW BESS at the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant.
The systems will be co-located with SNAP’s existing hydro facilities and are designed to provide ancillary services to the Luzon grid through the reserves market.
“Battery energy storage plays a critical role in supporting grid stability, providing fast-response services that help manage real-time frequency fluctuations, and enabling the integration of variable renewable energy sources.
As the Philippines continues to scale up renewable energy under its energy transition goals, the need for flexible and reliable ancillary services is expected to grow,” the company said.
Currently, SNAP has a 24-MW BESS at the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant providing ancillary services since 2024, with an additional 40 MW at Binga and 16 MW at Magat set to come online later this year—bringing its total BESS capacity in operation and under construction to 160 MW.
SNAPis a joint venture between Aboitiz Renewables, Inc.—the renewable energy arm of AboitizPower—and Scatec ASA.
The two companies are expanding their hydro and battery projects to build a more flexible portfolio and strengthen long-term energy security.
