Top setter Owa Retamar brings his act to Cambodia after signing a deal with Visakha.
The Alas Pilipinas playmaker will see action in the Fourth National Volleyball Championship, also known as the Sar Kheng Cup, running from 7 February to 1 March at the National Olympic Stadium.
Retamar, who steered Alas to a bronze medal finish in the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand, left for Cambodia Tuesday, according to his management team VP Global.
“Accepting this invitation from Cambodia is my way of contributing to help sustain the visibility of Philippine men’s volleyball, especially amid the uncertainties surrounding our local teams,” the National University product said.
Retamar accepted the golden opportunity to play overseas following the shock leave of absence of his local club, Cignal, in the Spikers’ Turf.
“I’m excited to learn from the environment there and contribute in the best way I can,” the decorated setter added.
Retamar, a member of the 2019 SEA Games silver medalist Alas squad, earned a spot in the Sar Kheng Cup as each participating club is allowed to register one foreign player in the tournament to elevate the level of play.
The four-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion has added to the list of Filipino volleyball stars playing as international imports.
Other Alas members currently playing abroad are Bryan Bagunas in Japan and Marck Espejo in Taiwan.
