Nartatez rules out ‘sweeping reshuffle’

Newly promoted Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Thursday that his elevation to the top post will not trigger an immediate or “sweeping reshuffle” of senior officials.

Speaking a day after donning his fourth star and taking his oath before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Nartatez stressed that any leadership movements within the 232,000-strong force would be orderly and based on organizational needs.

“There is no abrupt or sweeping reshuffle,” Nartatez said. “Leadership movement in the PNP is a normal process. What’s important is that our work continues without disruption.”

The 32nd PNP chief noted that existing anti-crime and internal security directives remain in effect to ensure continuity in major operations, including counterterrorism.

He urged the rank-and-file to remain focused on professionalism and discipline.

Nartatez’s promotion coincided with the 35th PNP Day on 29 January. In a video message for the anniversary, Marcos called for a “visible, disciplined and trusted” police force and reminded the organization of its role under civilian authority.

Responding to the President’s directive, Nartatez pledged to enforce the rule of law “without fear or favor.”

“My career has taught me one constant truth: policing must be firm, fair and anchored on integrity,” Nartatez said. “These are not slogans; these are standards.”

The new chief also committed to improving operational capabilities and prioritizing the welfare of personnel.

He cited that the security environment has become more demanding since the PNP’s inception in 1991, requiring a more “people-centered” approach to public safety.

Nartatez officially succeeded to the position on 28 January during ceremonies at Malacañang.
