The awards-season standoff between One Battle After Another and Sinners intensified as the two films led the BAFTA Film Award nominations. Both Warner Bros. releases surged ahead, cementing their status as the major contenders heading into the U.K.’s top film honors.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s political epic One Battle After Another tops the field with 14 nominations, while Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending historical horror Sinners follows closely behind with 13.

Record-setting runs for Anderson and Coogler

With 14 mentions, One Battle After Another sits just two nominations shy of BAFTA’s all-time record, previously set by Gandhi, and matches the tallies achieved by All Quiet on the Western Front, Atonement, The King’s Speech and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Anderson’s film landed across the board, including best film, director, acting and multiple craft categories.

Sinners, meanwhile, made BAFTA history of its own. Its 13 nominations represent the highest total ever for a film directed by a Black filmmaker at the organization. The film also marks a milestone moment for Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan, both of whom earned their first BAFTA nominations this year.

'Hamnet' and 'Marty Supreme' close behind

Just beneath the frontrunners, Hamnet and Marty Supreme tied with 11 nominations apiece. Timothée Chalamet returned to the leading actor race for a second consecutive year for Marty Supreme, while Hamnet emerged as the strongest U.K.-backed contender overall.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, Hamnet now holds the record for the most BAFTA nominations ever received by a film from a female director. Zhao is also the sole woman nominated in the director category this year. Josh Safdie, like Coogler, scored his first BAFTA directing nomination for Marty Supreme.

The BAFTA Film Awards will be held on 22 February at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Alan Cumming is set to host the ceremony.
