Weljon Mindoro is expected to vent his ire on a foreign foe when he makes his professional boxing comeback next month in his native Zamboanga.
After getting frustrated in his Southeast Asian Games debut in Thailand late last year, Mindoro, unbeaten in 15 fights, will be displaying his vaunted power when provincemate Eumir Marcial makes his promotional debut under EM Promotions and B-Steel Sports.
Mindoro has a 15-0-1 win-loss-draw record with all 15 wins coming by way of knockout.
Last December, he was recruited by the Philippine Olympic Committee to represent the country in the SEA Games in Bangkok but lost his match against a crafty puncher from Vietnam.
Mindoro took the first round but the Vietnamese adjusted quickly and went on to win the next two rounds for a points win.
“I learned a lot from that amateur stint. I kind of struggled with the weight,” Mindoro said.
“The priority (amateur boxing) is to score points to win and not so much in landing knockout punches which I wanted to do. Movement is important, too.”
Also appearing in the show is another son of Zamboanga, Philippine flyweight champion Albert Francisco, who holds a 14-1-1 mark with ten knockouts.
Marcial, who bagged the bronze in the Tokyo Olympics and struck gold in the last SEA Games, plans to do regular shows if his pilot project next month delivers.
In the meantime, Marcial is giddy with excitement as he joins the growing list of promoters in the country.
