A GoFundMe campaign set up for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent accused of fatally shooting a woman in Minneapolis has drawn hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations, even as questions remain over whether the officer can legally receive the funds.

According to TMZ, the fundraiser for Jonathan Ross had surpassed $475,000 as of Monday, less than a week after the death of Renee Nicole Good. The campaign, which carries a target of $550,000, was organized by Michigan resident Clyde Emmons, who said he launched it in response to what he described as misleading media coverage of Good, who had her own GoFundMe before it was taken down.

Emmons claimed Ross’ actions were “1000 percent justified” and said the funds were intended to support the ICE agent following the shooting.

One of the campaign’s most notable contributors was billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who donated $10,000. In a post on X, Ackman said he believed in the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” and described the incident as a tragedy. He also noted that he had planned to donate the same amount to Good’s fundraiser, which was later closed after raising more than $1.5 million.

Despite the surge in donations on GoFundMe, it remains unclear whether Ross can legally accept the money. Under U.S. Office of Government Ethics rules, federal employees are generally prohibited from receiving supplemental compensation related to their official duties, though gifts motivated by personal or familial relationships may be allowed under specific circumstances.

The shooting occurred on January 7 on a residential street in Minneapolis, when Good allegedly attempted to drive away as ICE officers ordered her out of her vehicle. Ross, positioned in front of the SUV, fired three shots, one of which struck Good in the head. Authorities have said the intentions of both Good and Ross at the scene remain disputed.

Members of the Trump administration, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have publicly defended Ross, arguing that he acted in self-defense.
