Archery could be a solid source of podium finishes when the Philippines competes in the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima starting next week.
The sport is making a comeback in the regional sportsfest, according to national team head coach Jonathan Josol, who just presides over a two-week training camp in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
The last time the sport was played, the Philippines got one silver and one bronze medal each in the 11th edition of the event.
A total of 11 archers, led by Marcel Burgos, Angelo Manangdang and Augustina Bantiloc, will march into Nakhon Ratchasima, determined to increase their medal tally.
“We focused on the team events because that’s where we usually win medals. We trained harder to improve our performance. That’s our elusive goal — to excel in team events,” Josol said.
“At the same time, we’re also hoping to win individual medals. Our scores are good, but our opponents are very experienced. Once we’re there, we’ll see who performs best.”
Josol said they will also be banking on the experience they had last February in the Asia Para Cup, where they won two bronze medals in the compound mixed team and compound men’s events.
“Thailand has been a good venue for us, and we’re hoping for the same result again.”
“We are only competing in W2. It’s open — some athletes are sitting, some are in wheelchairs, and some are standing. There is no W1 category this time.”
The Thais will be the team to beat in archery after winning four golds and four silver medals in 2022 as well as Indonesia which had a 3-3-4 medal tally.
Also joining the Filipinos in their campaign are Giovanni Ola, Michael Gorospe, and William Cablog as they aim for redemption in this year’s tournament for differently abled athletes.
