The fast-approaching 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand will serve as some sort of a tryout for those dreaming of making the Asian Para Games in Japan later in the year and even the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games, according to the Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC).

The Philippines will be sending 216 para athletes in the ASEAN Para Games set to open on 20 January in Nakhon Ratchasima.

“This ASEAN Para Games is a kick-off season. Some sports, like athletics and swimming, are not just competing here but also working toward rankings and qualifications for bigger events leading up to LA 2028,” PPC president Mike Barredo said.

“Some events will also serve as qualifiers for Nagoya and other major competitions. This is where serious preparation begins.”

“The ASEAN Para Games are part of our regular cycle. These Games are sub-regional, but very important.”

The Philippines hopes to improve from its 33-34-49 gold-silver-bronze medal tally in the 2023 ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia.
