Lensman dies while covering Nazareno

A photojournalist died while covering preparations for the yearly Traslacion of the Jesus Nazareno at the Quirino Grandstand on Friday morning.

Saksi Ngayon tabloid lensman Armelito “Itoh” Son, 55, was declared dead on arrival at the Gat Andres Bonifacio Medical Center in Tondo, Manila, at around 3 a.m., Friday.

The copy of the death certificate furnished DAILY TRIBUNE showed no cause of death indicated. Son’s family, however, believed that he suffered a heart attack.

“He was suffering from flu-like symptoms, a cold and cough. And he lacked sleep for three days as he was covering the preparations for the Traslacion. Sadly, he didn’t make it to the Traslacion proper,” said Arnesto Son, brother of the victim.

Task force expresses sympathy

Meanwhile, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has expressed its condolences to the family on the death of Son while he was on duty.

“His dedication to his profession despite his illness is proof of his love for his work and for delivering important events to the public. His invaluable service in the field of photojournalism will serve as an inspiration to others,” said Jose Torres Jr., executive director of PTFOMS.

“May this also serve as a reminder to all media workers to be vigilant about their health and safety while performing their duties. Amid the intense dedication, do not forget the importance of taking care of yourself to continue serving with care and concern for others,” Torres said.

Son’s daughter, Alyanna Danielle, said the viewing and visitation will be open to relatives and friends beginning Saturday, 10 January, at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City.

“We kindly ask for privacy this evening as we spend this time with his immediate family,” she said.
