For his valiant effort against Japanese champion Seiya Tsutsumi last month in Tokyo, the World Boxing Association (WBA) put Filipino-American Nonito Donaire on top of the bantamweight ratings in its updated rankings.
Donaire lost on a split decision last 17 December at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena but not after giving Tsutsumi a taste of hell.
Two judges ruled in favor of Tsutsumi, 115-113 and 117-111 while a third gave Donaire the edge, 116-112.
At 43 years of age, Donaire almost got the job do r when he staggered Tsutsumi with a right towards the ens of the fourth frame.
But Tsutsumi proved lucky as the bell sounded, preventing Donaire to land one more solid blow that could have finished off the champion.
So rocked and hurt Tsutsumi was that he had to hold the top rope as he walked back to his corner to prevent him from wobbling.
Tsutsumi, younger by 14 years, rallied from the sixth round onwards, banking on combinations to keep Donaire on the defensive.
The WBA’s decision to recognize Donaire’s gallantry could sway the three other boxing bodies from listing him on their respective groups.
His strong showing only made Donaire even more convinced that he still has it that he is targeting to fight anew for a world championship.
A four-division titleholder, Donaire hopes to secure another shot in 2026, training his sights on the other world champions in the 118-pound class.
