Pantone selected Cloud Dancer (Pantone 11-4201), described as a “billowy, balanced white imbued with serenity,” as its 2026 Color of the Year. The company framed the choice as a reflection of society’s search for clarity, calm and a “blank canvas” for creativity.
Despite Pantone’s intentions, the announcement ignited heated debate across design, fashion and social media circles: “Not a color at all” criticism.
Many argued that white is technically the absence of color, making the choice feel uninspired compared to past vibrant selections like Radiant Orchid or Viva Magenta Today.
Critics labeled the pick as tone-deaf and even “whitewashing,” questioning the optics of elevating white as a global symbol during a time of heightened conversations about diversity and representation. Also designers and consumers complained that the shade was “bleak” and “boring,” suggesting Pantone had run out of ideas or was playing it too safe based on an article from People.
While Pantone described Cloud Dancer as calming and reflective, detractors felt it ignored the vibrancy and complexity of current cultural moods, which demand boldness and inclusivity.
On social media, users mocked the announcement, with one TODAY Show host quipping: “Otherwise known as white.” While the CBC noted that the optics of choosing white as the defining color of the year were “not great,” given its loaded cultural associations CBC. According to FashionUnited, Pantone’s defense, emphasizing that Cloud Dancer represents a liminal space between digital futures and human connection.
