ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo provincial government on Tuesday broke ground on an Php8 million multi-purpose gym at the Iloilo District Jail Male Dormitory in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, intended to support rehabilitation programs for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

The facility, fully funded by the provincial government, is planned as a space for physical fitness, skills development, and structured activities for inmates. Officials said the gym is part of efforts to improve jail infrastructure and provide programs to prepare PDLs for life after release.

During a visit to the jail, the provincial government also distributed gift packs to around 2,000 inmates as part of its annual Christmas outreach. Each pack contained essential items and food.

BJMP Region 6 Director Senior Supt. Jhon Montero and Iloilo District Jail Administrator Atty. Jairus Anthony Dogelio noted that the project supports the ongoing rehabilitation and well-being of inmates.

Inmates welcomed the initiative, with one describing the gesture as a meaningful break from daily routine.

Construction on the gym has begun, and authorities emphasized that the facility will complement existing programs aimed at training, discipline, and rehabilitation for the jail population.
