In his latest Metro Manila Film Festival entry Unmarry, acclaimed filmmaker Jeffrey Jeturian once again shows why he remains one of the most respected storytellers in Philippine cinema. Known for his sensitivity to character and everyday emotion, Jeturian approaches Unmarry not as spectacle but as a deeply human film—one that lingers through restraint, honesty, and performance. In an exclusive chat, the director spoke about the film, his cast, and what he hopes audiences will carry with them after the credits roll.

For Jeturian, Unmarry is inseparable from the strength of its lead actress, Angelica Panganiban, whom he considers among the finest of her generation.

“I’ve always considered Angelica as one of the best actresses of her generation. She’s adept both in drama and comedy. Just like the late Nida Blanca, or Gina Pareño or Maricel Soriano. Nuanced ang acting niya.”

It is this nuance—felt rather than declared—that anchors the emotional core of the film and elevates its quiet moments into something deeply resonant.

Returning to the Metro Manila Film Festival also marks a meaningful milestone for Jeturian. He views the MMFF as a vital platform for Filipino cinema, one that continues to bring local stories to the widest possible audience.

“I’m always excited to have an entry in the Metro Manila Filmfest kasi it’s the biggest showcase of Filipino films every year. Unmarry is the second time I have a film in the festival. My first, being Bridal Shower back in 2004, so 21 years ago na. I feel fulfilled when I see my film resonating and connecting with the audience.”

For Jeturian, fulfillment lies not in accolades but in recognition—when viewers see parts of their own lives reflected onscreen.

At its heart, Unmarry is a film about relationships and the quiet work of sustaining them. Jeturian is clear about what he hopes viewers take away from the experience.

“Sana ang maging takeaway ng audience after watching Unmarry is they will learn to value and nurture whatever relationships they have with their loved ones.”

The natural chemistry between Panganiban and Zanjoe Marudo plays a crucial role in grounding the story. Their long-standing friendship and history of working together translate effortlessly onscreen.

“Magkaibigan si Zanjo at Angelica at maraming beses na silang nagsama sa mga TV at film projects kaya kabisado at kumportable na sila sa isa’t isa kaya’t natural na natural ang interaction nila sa mga eksena.”

This familiarity allows the actors to strip away performance artifice and focus instead on emotional truth.

One particular scene stands out for Jeturian as a testament to Panganiban’s subtle brilliance.
