A health expert highlighted practical and easy-to-follow strategies for Filipinos to enjoy the holiday season while keeping their health in check.
The International Diabetes Foundation estimates that 4.7 million Filipinos are currently living with diabetes.
Lifestyle change, such as a healthy diet, plays a vital part in helping people living with diabetes to manage their conditions.
Dr. Gamaliel Tayao, Abbott's head of medical affairs in the Philippines, stressed that simple strategies like portion control, choosing healthier alternatives, and staying active can make a big difference.
Tayao recommended mindful food swaps, such as exploring alternatives to white rice; opting for grilled dishes over fried food; choosing leaner meats for adobo or menudo; boosting dishes with fiber-rich veggies; and picking fruits over sugary desserts.
He also advised against skipping meals, explaining that it may lead to a blood sugar spike.
"Living well with diabetes starts with the power of choice--choosing nourishing foods, engaging in enjoyable physical activities, and monitoring glucose continuously," he added.
For physical activities, Tayao said it doesn't have to mean hitting the gym, but could be taking a walk with a loved one to enjoy the Christmas lights, dancing to their favorite tunes after Noche Buena, or getting moving while decorating, cooking, or tidying up.
"These everyday decisions allow people with diabetes to fully embrace the season, protect their health, and step into the new year with confidence and hope," he added.
