Residents living in Barangay Cupang discovered cracks along the road of the Arnedo Dike in the town of Arayat, Pampanga, on Thursday, raising concerns about the safety of the area.
According to Barangay Captain Rizal Lumbang, they first noticed the cracks on Thursday morning, with some measuring up to 50 meters in length.
In the initial assessment by engineers, the cracks were attributed to water saturation of the soil beneath the dike, caused by the recent rise in the Pampanga River’s water level following Super Typhoon Uwan.
Mayor Jeffrey Luriz immediately conducted an inspection of the area, along with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), to assess the dike’s condition and develop a rehabilitation plan.
Meanwhile, residents and motorists were advised to stay safe and limit their travel in the area. Luriz added that heavy machinery and trucks were banned from passing through the site to prevent further damage.
