Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has urged the public to exercise caution during the holiday season, noting that the increased gatherings often lead to higher risks of respiratory infections and accidents that strain the public health system.

Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, stressed that responsible behavior and early planning are key to preventing avoidable harm.

“It is wonderful to celebrate with family and friends, but let us not forget simple precautions,” Go said. “If you feel unwell, rest first and do not insist on going out. Let us take care of ourselves and our loved ones.”

He explained that public health systems frequently face pressure during high-mobility periods like the holidays, citing a seasonal increase in consultations and emergency room visits.

Simple choices, such as wearing masks when unwell and avoiding overcrowded spaces, can significantly reduce the transmission of common illnesses.

This concern ties directly into the health reforms Go has championed, including the Malasakit Centers program. Go is the principal author and sponsor of Republic Act 11463, or the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which institutionalized one-stop shops aimed at reducing hospital costs for impoverished patients.

Currently, 167 Malasakit Centers are operational nationwide, and the Department of Health reports the program has already aided more than 17 million Filipinos with medical expenses.
