MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan — The future of smart cities in the Philippines just got a boost with the launch of the Internet of Things Research and Innovation Laboratory for Smart Cities (IoTRILS) and the FUTURE-LAB Project at Bulacan State University (BulSU) on 1 December 2025.
The inauguration was led by DoST-PCIEERD Director Dr. Enrico C. Paringit, DoST III Regional Director Dr. Julius Caesar V. Sicat, represented by Michael Rivera, and BulSU president Dr. Teody C. Andre, who all highlighted the potential of IoT technologies to transform urban life.
“In today’s world, we need to connect the internet with our devices… to become more productive, safer, and more efficient,” Paringit said.
He emphasized that the laboratory’s equipment could help overcome human limitations, especially during calamities or crises.
“Sometimes as humans, we have weaknesses. These sensors and computers can do tasks that we might not be able to handle ourselves,” he added, pointing out innovations like controlling water pumps in flooded areas via cellphones and Long Range networks.
Funded by DoST-PCIEERD, the IoTRILS Laboratory is designed as a hub for research and development in IoT technologies, supporting smart, data-driven, and science-based solutions for regional growth. It aims to develop, test, and deploy IoT solutions that tackle urban challenges, improve public services, and enhance citizens’ quality of life in sustainable ways.
The lab also serves as a collaboration hub for academia, industry, and government, fostering innovation and preparing communities for smart city initiatives. DoST Bulacan reaffirmed its support, calling the projects vital for research, innovation, and regional development.
With IoTRILS and FUTURE-LAB, Bulacan is poised to become a beacon of technology-driven solutions, blending science, innovation, and practicality for a smarter, more resilient future.
