Many people think saving money is only for the rich. But truthfully, it’s how people become rich.
Even if you feel broke today, you can start building savings one small step at a time. I know because I started that way too.
When I was younger, I sold goods in Tondo just to help my family survive. There were no extra pesos left at the end of the day. But I learned something powerful: you don’t wait to save until you have more, you save so you can have more.
Here’s how to start even when you think it’s impossible:
1. Start with any amount — P10 a day, P50 a week, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the habit. Consistency beats size.
2. Make saving automatic. When your salary comes in, move money into savings right away. Treat it like a bill, non-negotiable.
3. Cut “invisible” spending. Subscriptions you don’t use, delivery fees, or daily snacks that add up. Trim the fat, not the joy.
4. Use the envelope system. Divide your cash into labeled envelopes: bills, food, transport, savings. When one runs out, you stop spending. It’s visual, simple, and effective.
5. Reward yourself with progress, not purchases. When you hit a goal, don’t celebrate by spending it, celebrate by saving more.
Saving is not about what you can’t do; it’s about what you choose to do.
Imagine the peace of knowing you can handle emergencies, the confidence of having your own fund, and the pride of seeing your hard work grow.
You don’t need to be rich to start saving. You just need to start.
Because the first peso saved is not about the amount, it’s about the decision.
