ILOILO CITY — Demonstrating a renewed effort to protect this coastal city from increasing climate threats, the city government of Iloilo has partnered with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Philippines to initiate a science-based restoration of its mangrove and beach forest areas.
Mayor Raisa Treñas and ZSL Philippines Country Director, Mary Edwina Garchitorena inked the agreement at City Hall, cementing a partnership that has long shaped Iloilo’s environmental programs. Mangrove scientist Jurgenne Primavera and ZSL technical staff witnessed the signing ceremony at Iloilo City Hall on Monday, 17 November.
Data first, disaster-proofing next
Under the pact, ZSL Philippines will establish baseline biophysical data, conduct regular ecological monitoring, and produce biophysical and socio-economic reports to steer legislation and planning.
The group will also spearhead public education campaigns, help craft policy frameworks that tighten habitat protection, and assist communities in setting up local enterprises and savings groups tied to conservation.
Officials said the science-based approach aims to ensure that coastal rehabilitation is “not just planting trees, but protecting a life-saving barrier.”
City to lead long-term coastal management
The city government, meanwhile, is committed to adopting integrated coastal management, identifying mangrove and beach forest areas for protection, and securing long-term tenure arrangements for community groups tasked with on-the-ground stewardship.
It will also lead information drives, support field activities, and pass the necessary ordinances to sustain the project.
Partnership built on a proven track record
Iloilo City and ZSL Philippines previously collaborated on the Iloilo Beach Forest Park along Molo Boulevard and on native tree planting across public plazas—projects now regarded as early pillars of the city’s climate resilience plan.
With the new agreement, Iloilo officials said the message is clear: the city is moving from piecemeal efforts to a full-scale defense of its coastline.
