Four vessels ran aground in separate incidents in Antique, Batangas, and Palawan amid the strong winds and rough seas brought by Typhoon Uwan, said the Philippine Coast Guard.
In a press conference on Monday, PCG Civil Relations Service deputy commander Captain John Barrameda said a tugboat, Sea Asia 2, and barge Sea Asia 102 ran aground about 100 meters from the shoreline of San Jose Fishport in San Jose, Antique.
Another grounding involved the landing craft tank Felicity 8 near Barangay Wawa, Nasugbu, Batangas, while a submerged motorbanca, Shenalyn 2, was reported in the waters off Barangay Sto. Niño, San Vicente, Palawan.
No casualties were reported in any of the incidents.
The PCG also reported that 4,806 passengers were stranded at various ports nationwide between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. due to the threat posed by Typhoon Uwan.
A total of 2,222 rolling cargoes, 44 vessels, and 20 motorbancas were stranded, while 392 vessels and 123 motorbancas took shelter to avoid damage from the storm.
On the other hand, the PCG conducted “Libreng Sakay” (Free Ride) services for stranded passengers from Taft Avenue to Araneta Center, Cubao, and back, ensuring safer travel amid the inclement weather.
The program aims to support citizens during both stormy and calm seasons and highlights the PCG’s commitment to assisting Filipinos not just at sea, but on land as well.
“Maraming salamat sa inyong patuloy na tiwala. Sama-sama tayong maglakbay tungo sa ligtas, maayos, at maginhawang biyahe,” the PCG said in a statement, underscoring its dedication to the safety and welfare of the public during disasters.
