Donaire targets WBA bantam crown

Don’t count Nonito Donaire just yet.
The four-division world champion will be attempting win a title at age 43 when he challenges Seiya Tsutsumi for the World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight crown on 17 December at Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena in Tokyo.
To get ready for what looks like his last chance at winning a world title, Donaire has relocated his training camp in Las Vegas and arrived in Cebu City last week.
Tsutsumi, 29, will be making the second defense of the title he had won from Takuma Inoue.
In his initial defense, Tsutsumi battled Daigo Higa to a draw.
Holding a 12-0-3 win-loss-draw record with eight knockouts, Tsutsumi is also known for his fight with Kazuko Anaguchi for the Japanese national title in December 2023 in Tokyo.
Tsutsumi won on points in an action-packed and intense battle that caused a fatal injury to Anaguchi, whi died six weeks later due to subdural hematoma.
Donaire, parading a 43-8-0 mark with 28 knockouts, last fought in June when he beat Andres Campos of Chile on a technical decision.
“It’s an honor for me to fight one of the best in the division,” Donaire said in a video message during a press conference that took place Thursday at the Tokyo Dome Hotel.
Before winning over Campos, Donaire suffered back-to-back defeats to Naoya Inoue in 2022 and Alejandro Santiago of Mexico in Las Vegas for the World Boxing Council diadem in 2023.
