Back in rhythm and regaining its championship form, PLDT looks to sustain its momentum and strengthen its drive for another title run as it clashes with winless Nxled in a rare Friday triple-header of the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
PLDT showed no signs of lingering rust from its surprising loss to Cignal, dismantling the erstwhile unbeaten Farm Fresh side in four sets last weekend. The win signaled a firm return to dominance after the team’s 15-game winning streak was snapped by the Super Spikers last 21 October.
The PVL On Tour and Invitational Conference champions quickly shook off that stumble, dictating the pace with an aggressive attack and tight net defense. Their latest triumph once again made them the clear favorites to dominate their assignments, including in the knockout stages, en route to another possible finals appearance.
While another sweep looms as a possibility, most observers believe it will be a far steeper climb this time.
The depth and balance of the current field — each team armed with strong imports and deeper benches — make the path to another title anything but straightforward. Every win now carries enormous implications for top three positioning in the group stage and favorable crossovers in the next round.
The top eight will advance to the knockout stages, progressing from the quarterfinals to the semifinals and finally to the finals of the year-ending tournament.
Against Nxled, however, PLDT enters as a heavy favorite. A victory would formalize their top three finish in Pool A and secure a crossover clash with the lower-ranked teams in Pool B. But the Chameleons, still chasing their elusive first win, are eager to spring a surprise. They came agonizingly close last weekend after taking a 2-1 lead over Cignal, only to falter under late pressure in the last two sets.
For Cignal, that hard-fought win was a turning point — reigniting their campaign. The Super Spikers (2-2) now aim to extend their streak when they battle the Capital1 Solar Spikers (1-2) in the 1:30 p.m. opener.
Both squads are in a precarious spot in the standings, making this duel a must-win affair for top three contention.
The 4 p.m. showdown between Farm Fresh and Choco Mucho also promises to be just as gripping.
The Foxies, eager to rebound from their first loss, need a win to cement their hold on the No. 2 slot in Pool A. The Flying Titans, sitting at 2-1, are equally desperate to build momentum and secure a psychological edge before their replay showdown with the Capital1 Solar Spikers on 4 November.
