Trade Secretary Cristina Roque has officially taken on the responsibility of the ASEAN Chairmanship at the closing of the 47th ASEAN Summit on Tuesday, 28 October, marking the start of the Philippines’ preparations to lead the region under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., accompanied by Secretary Roque, received the chairmanship from Malaysia, which led ASEAN in 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”

During the event, the Philippines also announced its thematic priorities anchored on three key pillars: Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment.

These pillars reflect the country’s vision for a united and people-centered ASEAN that promotes stability, progress, and inclusion across the region.

Starting 1 January 2026, the Philippines will facilitate a year-long series of high-level meetings aimed at translating these priorities into action and driving collaboration on emerging issues that matter most to the region.

The President thanked Malaysia for its leadership and emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to continue advancing regional partnership.

Secretary Roque said that as ASEAN Chair, she will focus on enhancing regional stability, promoting shared growth, and supporting communities through inclusive development.

“Our thematic priorities will guide ASEAN toward practical cooperation—ensuring peace that enables progress, prosperity that reaches every sector, and empowerment that drives participation from all,” Roque added.

For the Philippines, the Chairship offers a platform to demonstrate its leadership in trade, investment, digital innovation, MSME development, and the creative economy.

It also celebrates the country’s rich cultural heritage and creative spirit, showcasing the beauty of its landscapes, the warmth of its people, and the artistry of local entrepreneurs.

The Philippines last chaired ASEAN in 2017 during the organization’s 50th anniversary. Almost a decade later, the country is once again ready to take the lead and help guide the region toward a shared and prosperous future.

ASEAN-BAC Chair

Meanwhile, Jose Ma. Concepcion III, along with council members George Barcelon and Michael Tan, separately assumed the chairmanship of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), which the Malaysian government handed over.

In a ceremony on 26 October in Kuala Lumpur, Concepcion III and the delegation received the ASEAN-BAC Chairmanship of the regional body, which provides private sector feedback and guidance to boost ASEAN’s efforts toward economic integration and identifies priority areas for consideration by ASEAN leaders.

ASEAN-BAC Philippines is expected to build on the theme “Prosperity for All,” its guiding principle during its last chairmanship in 2017.

“There has been plenty of exchanging of ideas, and I am glad to hear how some resonate with my own views of the role of ASEAN and the private sector in bringing about inclusive, sustainable growth,” said Concepcion.

“As we take on this new role, our goal is to build on this momentum, empowering MSMEs and strengthening partnerships that drive inclusive growth and food security across the region. Together, we can ensure that the ASEAN spirit of unity, innovation, and entrepreneurship continues to thrive,” Concepcion added.
