Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Eumir Marcial can’t wait to showcase his wares before an adoring home crowd that includes the guy who might guide him to the world middleweight title.
“I am so grateful for this wonderful opportunity,” Marcial said on Monday after breaking his Tagaytay City camp.
Marcial locks horns with Venezuelan knockout artist Eddy Colmenares this Wednesday night during the 50th anniversary of the Thrilla in Manila at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Marcial says eight-division legend Manny Pacquiao and American dealmaker Sean Gibbons have been vital in his professional career.
“God willing I will fight for the world title,” Marcial, who celebrates his 30th birthday on fight night, said.
Gibbons is lining up a series of fights for the heavy-handed southpaw from Zamboanga, culminating hopefully to a world championship fight towards the end of 2026.
But Marcial is not looking too far ahead, adding that doing so is extremely dangerous.
“I am focused on this fight,” he said.
He began training for the Thrilla fight in August in the country before relocating to Las Vegas where he spent four weeks.
A little over two weeks ago, he returned to Manila and motored to Tagaytay City to resume his buildup.
Providing solid sparring was fellow big-hitter Weljon Mindoro, who was his perennial sparmate in Las Vegas.
“Done with hard sparring. Ours was more on the tactical aspect,” said Marcial, who has a 6-0 win-loss record with four knockouts.
In his last bout, Marcial demolished Bernard Joseph in the undercard of a Pacquiao headliner in Las Vegas.
Colmenares enters the Marcial match with an 11-2-1 slate with 11 knockouts.
Nicknamed “El Tigre,” Colmenares has vowed to derail Marcial’s road to the top.
But with a Big Dome audience that will have Pacquiao, Marcial will do everything he can to make an impression.
Pacquiao has made it public that when Marcial gets his chance to win a world title, he will be the one to train him.
