DAVAO City — After years of near-misses, Fidel Concepcion finally turned promise into triumph, capturing his first Philippine Golf Tour title at the ICTSI Apo Golf Classic Friday — in a finish that tested nerves, skill and endurance.
Concepcion, who held a commanding six-shot lead midway through the final round, saw his advantage evaporate under pressure. Yet when it mattered most, the Fil-Australian kept his cool, sinking a career-defining 10-foot birdie on the second playoff hole to edge Korea’s Jaehyun Jung and claim the elusive victory.
“Honestly, it’s unreal,” Concepcion said, visibly emotional. “It’s one of those things you never know if it will ever happen. And somehow — it did.”
For over a decade, Concepcion had been tagged as “potential waiting to blossom.” Near-misses, heartbreaks, and fleeting brilliance had defined his 12-year journey. This win wasn’t just a trophy — it was vindication.
Outdriven by Jung in both playoff holes, Concepcion relied on precision and poise. On the second trip to the par-4 ninth, he hit a perfect 4-iron off the tee, followed by a crisp 8-iron from 160 yards downwind that stopped 10 feet from the cup. Jung couldn’t match it, missing his birdie attempt as Concepcion rolled in the winner.
The road to the playoff had been rocky. Early birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 had him two-under through seven, six shots clear. But the Apo Golf and Country Club’s challenging layout struck back: a double bogey on the eighth and another on 10 allowed the field to close in.
“There were a lot of ups and downs,” Concepcion recalled. “The back nine was a roller-coaster, so if there’s one highlight for me, it would definitely be that final putt.”
Jung stormed the back nine with three birdies in four holes, posting a tournament-best 67 to match Concepcion at 284, forcing the playoff. Tony Lascuña finished third at 288, followed by Guido van der Valk (289) and Elee Bisera (291).
For Concepcion, the P630,000 winner’s purse was secondary to what this victory represents: perseverance, resilience, and the fulfillment of long-awaited potential.
“I just kept playing my game, focusing on hitting solid shots. It’s really hard to avoid mistakes on this course,” he said.
After 12 years of searching for answers, Concepcion found them not in perfection, but in patience and resolve. Now, as a certified PGT champion, he no longer walks as a journeyman chasing form, but as a player reborn — one who proved that sometimes, the road to glory runs through the storm.
