The European Union (EU) has announced the release of €750,000 (around P50 million) in humanitarian aid to help families affected by the recent earthquake that struck Cebu.
In a statement on Saturday, the EU said the funds will support emergency relief operations — including shelter, clean water, and sanitation — for the most severely affected communities, particularly displaced residents who lost their homes.
Of the total amount, P250,000 (approximately P17 million) will go directly to the Philippine Red Cross, enabling it to provide cash assistance, tents, household essentials, and healthcare support to quake survivors.
The aid package forms part of the EU’s contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies — a global mechanism that allows for rapid humanitarian response to natural disasters.
The EU delegation also said it is closely monitoring the situation in Davao Oriental, where a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck on 10 October, to determine if additional assistance will be extended to affected families and communities there.
