ILOILO CITY — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Western Visayas has found no major structural damage to the Ungka Flyover in Pavia after two recent strong earthquakes were felt in Iloilo, the agency said.

The inspection followed the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu on September 30 and the stronger magnitude 7.4 quake in Davao Oriental on October 10, both of which were felt across Panay Island.

OIC Regional Director Engr. Jose Al Fruto said technical teams from DPWH-6 conducted a Rapid Visual Assessment (RVA) of the flyover and other major structures using a Bridge Inspection Vehicle to check for cracks or signs of distress.

“RVA is a standard procedure after significant seismic events to determine if public infrastructures remain safe for use,” Fruto said.

He added that the same evaluation will be extended to other key facilities, including heritage churches and historical landmarks that often attract large crowds.

According to the initial findings, the Ungka Flyover showed no critical damage and remains open to light vehicles. DPWH engineers will continue to monitor the structure for possible aftershocks and hidden stress points.

Fruto said the agency would recommend temporary closure of any structure if inspections reveal serious safety risks.

The Ungka Flyover has been under close public scrutiny since its partial closure in 2022 due to reported vertical displacement issues shortly after it opened to traffic.
