Following the rise in school-based violence, the Department of Education (DepEd) has partnered with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to help safeguard students and education personnel.

In a meeting with PNP Chief Police General Nicolas Torre III, Education Secretary Sonny Angara requested increased police visibility around schools and the upskilling of first responders from barangays and schools.

The secretary also expressed gratitude to the police force for its support in maintaining safety on campuses.

“We thank the Philippine National Police for their cooperation in creating a safer and more peaceful learning space for everyone,” he said in Filipino.

Prior to this, DepEd coordinated with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to deploy barangay tanods around school premises to strengthen security measures.

Earlier this week, DepEd also issued a memorandum mandating stricter security protocols, including bag inspections and the prohibition of firearms and other dangerous materials.

The directive further emphasized the need to strengthen reporting systems for abuse and bullying, provide mental health and psychosocial support, coordinate with other government agencies, and develop localized school safety and contingency plans.
