The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity, sustainable development, and strengthened defense cooperation on the 58th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Thursday.

In his message, Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. underscored ASEAN’s legacy as a "resilient, dynamic, and people-centered community" built on principles of unity, multilateralism, and mutual respect since its founding on August 8, 1967.

“This year's theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' reflects ASEAN's commitment to ensuring that progress benefits all, leaving no one behind,” Teodoro highlighted.

He noted that ASEAN has been a steadfast driver of peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, facing challenges through the collective resolve of its Member States.

Teodoro also lauded the ongoing initiatives of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the ADMM-Plus for fostering trust, transparency, and interoperability among the defense forces of member states. According to the release, these efforts have enhanced regional capabilities to address humanitarian crises, combat evolving security threats, and protect critical maritime routes, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.

“As the Philippines prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, the DND reaffirms its resolve to advance practical cooperation and uphold a rules-based regional order in support of a peaceful and resilient Southeast Asia,” Teodoro said.

ASEAN is composed of ten Southeast Asian nations, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

It continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s political, economic, and security landscape in the region.
