An explosion at the US Steel Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh on Monday left at least one person dead, with emergency crews working to free others trapped beneath rubble.

The blast occurred shortly before 11 AM at the facility in Clairton, Allegheny County officials confirmed. At least two people remain unaccounted for, while several others have been treated for injuries. The conditions of the injured were not immediately disclosed.

Authorities said search and rescue operations were ongoing. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman described the situation as active, with reports of dozens injured, while Clairton Mayor Rich Lattanzi confirmed multiple injuries. Lattanzi said initial information suggested the explosion happened in the “reversing room” of the plant’s coking operation.

Union representatives from United Steelworkers District 10 said they were on site to support affected workers and coordinate with authorities. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

The Clairton Coke Works, located about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River, is the largest coking facility in North America and employs thousands of workers.
