Alternergy Holdings Corp. is tapping into the strong wind resources of Albay Province in the Bicol region by launching wind assessments for potential 300-megawatt (MW) twin wind power projects.

The company said on Monday that it has deployed a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system to measure wind conditions that will help determine the feasibility of its proposed Albay Wind Power Projects 1 and 3, each with a potential capacity of 150 MW.

“Our LiDAR system has started collecting wind measurements that will be instrumental in determining the feasibility of the project. We are excited to explore the wind power potential of Albay Province and support the province’s sustainability goals,” Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. president Knud Hedeager said.

“Our team is committed to ensuring that the Albay Wind Power Projects are executed with the utmost care for the environment and the local community,” he added.

To reinforce the LiDAR measurement, Alternergy said a meteorological mast will be installed by the fourth quarter to provide additional data ahead of the wind season.

The Department of Energy issued a Certificate of Authority (COA) to Alternergy earlier this year for the Albay Wind Power Projects, giving the company three years to finish pre-feasibility studies and secure permits. If the projects prove viable, the COA will convert into a 25-year Wind Energy Service Contract.

Alternergy also secured a second COA from the DOE for a planned 150-megawatt onshore wind project covering 3,807 hectares in Batangas City and Lobo.

Alternergy plans to deliver a total of 500 MW of capacity by 2026.
