More than two-million Filipinos have registered to vote in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced Sunday.
Comelec data showed that in just nine days, 2.1-million people signed up nationwide. Calabarzon topped the list with 265,000 registrants, followed by Central Luzon with 220,000, and Metro Manila with 156,000.
Photos and videos shared by Comelec revealed jam-packed registration sites in malls and public booths in Manila and Bacolod.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia, who was in Bacolod to oversee the final day of registration, expressed gratitude to the public for what he described as one of the most successful and historic drives ever held in such a short period.
“As the voters’ registration period ends, we thank the more than two- million people who persevered, patiently lined up, and joined us in this successful, historic and extraordinary event in such a short time,” Garcia said.
“This only proves that we all want our voices to be heard, no matter our station in life.”
Garcia also commended young voters for stepping forward.
“The Filipino youth truly stand firm in carrying the nation’s future. Answering the call to register is, in itself, an act of heroism,” he added.
Comelec reiterated that there will be no extension for voter registration, as the law prohibits it within 120 days before an election. Registration centers were set up in municipal offices, schools, transport terminals and even some hospitals.
If President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signs the bill postponing the BSKE, Garcia said voter registration will reopen in October and run until July 2026.
