The Philippines’ 7-0 win over Timor Leste made it clear it has no plans on giving away the ASEAN Women’s Championship on a silver platter.
Filipinas team captain Hali Long said they could have scored more but was satisfied with how they executed their game plan.
Quinley Quezada (seventh and 32nd minutes) and Dionesa Tolentin (57th and 64th) led the scoring barrage with two goals each while Aaliyah Schinaman (second minute), team captain Hali Long (9th), and Adelaide Rosalinda Wyrzinski (75th) added their names on the scoreboard at the Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, Vietnam.
“Overall, the team played well. We could have gotten more today so there’s more growing and learning,” Long said in a post-match interview.
“But I’m really proud of the group we put out today and all the subs that came on today gave us good energy.”
The Filipinas, who are currently at No. 39 in the International Football Association rankings, are doing well despite the absence of strikers Sarina Bolden and Katrina Guillou due to injuries.
They are also playing without midfielders Sara Eggesvik and Meryll Serrano due to commitments to their clubs.
Long said they don’t have any plans of easing up as they brace for tough challenges from the Australian U23 squad, which they will face on Sunday, and Myanmar on 13 August.
Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinal.
“We don’t take any team lightly and we don’t know which way this group will go. There was a good game before us with Myanmar coming out on top, 2-1,” Long said.
“Looking forward to watching that game and seeing what kind of results we can pull off in the next two games.”
