For their recent exploits in the Asian Boxing U19 and U22 Championships in Thailand, Filipino young punchers Ronel Suyom and Mark Ashley Fajardo were lauded by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP).
ABAP secretary general Marcus Manalo told DAILY TRIBUNE that they had to make the tough decision to withdraw Fajardo, who is competing in the U22 men’s 65-kilogram division, and Suyom, who is listed in the men’s 55kg division, despite their pugs still wanting to fight.
Suyom suffered a cut over his left eye after his victory over Shaoqing Li of China in the quarterfinal via unanimous decision while Fajardo had a left hand injury at the start of the tournament.
“Initially, they both wanted to compete in the semis. I know this opportunity means so much to them but we are not risking their long-term health,” Manalo said.
“They have done a great job in the tournament and are bringing home bronze medals. There’s no point in taking risks with their injuries.”
Manalo said they cannot risk the fighters’ injuries.
“It was just unfortunate for Ronel because this is his first tournament after a long hiatus due to injuries. He has been performing well and has a very good chance to be in the finals and win the gold,” Manalo said.
“As for Ashley, he basically fought in the quarterfinals with one hand and we didn’t want him to risk it again especially since he’ll be competing at the World Championships in September.”
Despite missing out on potential, Manalo said getting the bronze medal is no easy feat.
