CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Heavy traffic inadvertently saved the life of a 26-year-old man who attempted to jump off Ysalina Bridge near City Hall on Saturday evening.
According to police reports, the man was on a motorcycle at around 6 p.m. when he tried to cross the bridge but was stalled by the traffic buildup in the area.
He then parked his motorcycle on the roadside, climbed over the bridge railing, and walked toward the center span. Witnesses said he appeared distressed, looked down at the river below, and began weeping.
Fortunately, several alert motorists, stuck in traffic, noticed the commotion. Two drivers quickly got out of their vehicles, approached the man, and pulled him away from the edge before he could jump. They stayed with him and tried to calm him down until a nearby police patrol arrived at the scene.
The man was taken to a nearby police station for questioning. When asked about the reason for his attempted suicide, he remained silent and continued to weep. Police later turned him over to the City Social Services Department for further evaluation and psychosocial intervention.
