The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s lone transmission operator, placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert on Friday due to multiple power plant outages and high electricity demand.
The yellow alert, in effect from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., signals that operating reserves are insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirements, although it does not immediately mean power interruptions.
In the Visayas, available capacity stood at 2,569 megawatts (MW), slightly above the projected peak demand of 2,449 MW.
A total of 423 MW is unavailable due to 10 plants on forced outage from April to July, six others offline since 2024, and four operating on derated capacity.
Mindanao recorded a peak demand of 2,667 MW against 2,827 MW in available capacity.
However, 638.3 MW is offline due to 11 plants that went on forced outage from June to July, two others that have been out since 2024, and three running on reduced capacity.
NGCP said the Luzon grid remains under normal condition.
