Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro will continue serving the Marcos administration as Palace Press Officer.
This comes after acting Secretary Dave Gomez confirmed Castro’s role, recognizing her as Palace Press Officer “effective immediately.”
Upon assuming the PCO’s top post, Gomez asked officials to submit courtesy resignations as part of a reorganization under his leadership.
Castro said she would comply with the directive to give Gomez "leeway" in choosing the people he wants to work with.
While Castro retains her post, the position of Palace Press Officer will not be created as a new item within the PCO’s organizational structure.
“This confirmation shall not entail the creation of a new plantilla item or result in additional compensation beyond those authorized by applicable laws and regulations,” Special Order No. 25-174 dated 29 July stated.
The Palace Press Officer is tasked with speaking to the media and providing timely statements and clarifications on presidential engagements, policies, and positions as may be authorized.
Castro will also coordinate with the Media Accreditation and Relations Office, Presidential News Desk, and other relevant units in support of press relations and media operations.
She is likewise directed to supervise the preparation of messaging materials and briefing content for official media engagements.
Castro will report directly to the PCO Secretary for policy guidance, strategic direction, and official issuances.
She joined the PCO in February alongside former Secretary Jay Ruiz, who was later appointed to the Manila Economic and Cultural Office.
Castro is a lawyer with trial experience and a media background, having worked as a radio commentator and columnist for various news outlets.
Gomez said there are currently no new appointees in the PCO despite rumors of individuals set to join the office.
Castro is the first official to be retained as Gomez continues his performance review of the department.
