Charly Suarez might get another shot at Mexican slugger Emanuel Navarrete after all.

This was the news relayed by Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum to DAILY TRIBUNE on Saturday.

Their fight held last May in San Diego, California, had earlier been ruled a technical decision win for Navarrete, who was defending his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-featherweight crown at the Pechanga Arena.

All three judges scored it 78-75 and 77-76 (twice), allowing Navarrete to retain the WBO 130-pound throne.

The referee had ruled that the cut above Navarrete’s left eyebrow was caused by a clash of heads and not the Filipino’s sneaky left straight.

But that result was overturned when the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) investigated the matter following a protest filed by Suarez’s camp.

The CSAC then changed the outcome to a No-Contest with the announcement being made with Suarez’s chief trainer Delfin Boholst and Ricardo Navalta, who works for Ilocos political kingpin Luis “Chavit” Singson, in attendance in Los Angeles.

Still, it was a result that Suarez and his camp had badly desired since it was crystal clear that a legal punch had opened the hideous cut.

Suarez’s people had hoped that the outcome would be ruled an eighth-round technical knockout win.

Arum, who heads the Las Vegas-based Top Rank Inc., one of the world’s foremost promotional companies, said a clearer picture will surface next month once the commission clears Suarez.

The CSAC put Navarrete under medical suspension because of the cut that he suffered and he has since recovered.

Arum, 93, said he is eyeing a date in November or December for the Navarrete-Suarez rematch.

Suarez, who will be 37 on 14 August, had feared that Navarrete would decide to move up in weight and avoid giving him a chance.

But with Arum now saying that his company has plans to stage a second meeting, Suarez can now heave a sigh of relief.

Suarez currently holds an 18-0-0 win-loss-draw card with ten knockouts while Navarrete, 30, sports a 39-2-1 ledger with 32 stoppages.
