Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III has accepted the fistfight challenge from Davao City acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, proposing a charity boxing match to benefit communities affected by recent typhoons and flooding.

In an ambush interview Wednesday, Torre disclosed that he is ready for a 12-round bout, with proceeds earmarked for disaster relief.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh, perfect timing.’ Many of our fellow Filipinos are in need right now after being affected by the storm and floods,” Torre told reporters. “Maybe this is a very good time for a charity boxing match.”

What began as a heated exchange between the two is now shaping up as a high-stakes event for a charitable cause. Torre suggested holding the event this Sunday at 9 a.m. at the iconic Araneta Coliseum.

“Maybe we can use this moment as an opportunity to raise funds through a proper charity boxing match this coming Sunday at Araneta. We can go for 12 rounds of boxing so it’s exciting and we can raise a good amount,” Torre said.

He also proposed corporate sponsors for each round to maximize fundraising efforts, suggesting they “place their merchandise before each round.”

To recall, Duterte had directly challenged Torre to a fistfight in a YouTube vlog uploaded Sunday.

“You’re only brave because of your position. But if it came to a fight, I know I could take you. But then, you’re a coward,” Duterte said in the video.

Torre responded to the challenge not with hostility, but with the detailed proposal for a structured boxing match.

When asked if he was seriously considering Duterte’s challenge, Torre dismissed its sincerity.

“He challenged me to a fistfight, and on my part, whether he is serious or not, let’s just put this to a better use if that’s what he wants,” said Torre.

He also indicated flexibility regarding the venue if Araneta Coliseum is unavailable. “I’ll ask Araneta to set up a boxing ring. Hopefully, they will oblige. If that doesn’t work out, we’ll look for whatever gym he prefers.”

However, the PNP chief clarified his motivation for responding, stating he saw an opportunity to make a positive difference.

“I’m not engaging him personally. I just see this as an opportunity to help our countrymen, which is why I’m sure there will be many sponsors, and the proceeds we raise we will donate to charity,” Torre said. “For me, I will personally donate whatever share I have for those affected by the recent typhoons and floods.”

Torre stressed he holds no personal grudge against Duterte.

“Nothing personal. To be honest, I just saw a very good opportunity to raise funds for charity,” said the PNP chief.

Regarding the possibility of Duterte backing out, Torre left the decision to him.

“It’s on him. He was the one who issued the challenge. As for us, we are just accepting it,” Torre said.
