Nothing beats hard work, SM exec tells Gen Z

A high-ranking official of SM Investments Corporation has urged Generation Z students to focus on their studies and work hard to earn appreciation, rather than expect it upfront.

SM Investments executive director Harley Sy made the statement during the awarding ceremony of 900 scholarships to deserving incoming college freshmen at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on Sunday.

Answering a scholar’s question on the relevance of recognition, Sy emphasized that hard work should come first before expecting to be acknowledged along their educational journey.

“I think what’s happening today for young people, especially Gen Z, is that they expect to be acknowledged and appreciated always,” Sy said. “During our time, we didn’t have so many choices in life, and we didn’t expect anything.”

“Do not expect too much appreciation for yourselves,” he added. “Learn over time, and in time, you will be recognized and appreciated. You are just studying and starting, but in time, you will get the appreciation you are asking for.”

Sy, the youngest among SM founder Henry “Tatang” Sy’s children, also reminded the scholars that the road ahead will most likely be bumpy.

“Challenges, problems, and conflicts are along the way. No shortcuts,” he said. “But do not forget your goal: to finish your studies. And hopefully, after that, you will be able to help a lot of people on your own.”

“Also, do not be afraid to ask if you don’t know or are not sure in the course of your learning—until you find the right answer.”

Diploma or diskarte

Another scholar raised a common concern among Gen Z students: diploma versus diskarte (strategy). Should students finish college, or is it better to start working right after graduating from senior high school?
