Blessing in disguise

Methane is said to be a worse air pollutant than carbon dioxide and a major contributor to global warming. Controlling the emission of the gas requires identifying its sources across the globe, so the non-government organization Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) developed and launched a satellite to detect methane on the ground.

(EDF) developed and launched a satellite to detect methane on the ground.

Funded by tech giants like Google and billionaire Jeff Bezos to the tune of $88 million, the MethaneSat was put into orbit last year with the mission of gathering data on the gas for five years, BBC reported.

EDF, however, reported it had lost communication with the satellite near the end of June. The team at EDF suspects that the satellite lost power and that “it is likely not recoverable.”

The missing satellite that was intended to address pollution is now a derelict itself, adding to the space junk in the thousands, littering Earth’s orbital zone.

Meanwhile, a user of online discussion group Reddit sparked a viral exchange about a virtually lost wallet. The Redditor shared one family’s search for the misplaced billfold that wasn’t really lost.

A photo of the family’s bathroom showed the full story of how the wallet was seen many times but remained unnoticed until two days later, New York Post (NYP) reported.

Like a chameleon, the dark colored wallet blended with the bathroom floor design as it looked like one of the smaller tiles. Family members walked past it many times before realizing it was just right under their noses.
