Two schools in Barangay Tanza, Navotas suspended morning classes Thursday after knee-deep flooding caused by a 2.1-meter high tide.
The flooding was attributed to ongoing repairs of the Tangos-Tanza Navigational Gate, which were initially expected to be completed last 20 June.
Navotas City Representative Toby Tiangco announced in a Facebook post that cracks were discovered in a welded section of the gate’s left driving arm. He said the re-welding process requires 24 to 48 hours for cooling before inspection and reinstallation of the link rod. Tiangco now estimates the gate’s repair will be finished by Tuesday, 1 July.
Beyond Barangay Tanza, other areas in Navotas City experienced flooding, including Barangay San Rafael Village, Bangkulasi, BBN, Navotas West, Sipac Almacen, San Jose, Daanghari, San Roque and Tangos.
The Navotas City Public Information Office said that all other pumping stations within the city are operational. City crews are conducting sandbagging and declogging operations along M. Naval Street in San Roque to mitigate the floods.
Neighboring Malabon City also saw significant flooding due to the high tide. The Malabon City local government reported that parts of C. Arellano Street in Barangay Ibaba and the Malabon Central Market were submerged under 26 inches of water, making them impassable to light vehicles. Other flooded areas included Barangays Baritan, Concepcion, Hulong Duhat and Tañong.
The Malabon local government provided free rides to residents and commuters stranded by both the severe flooding and a transport strike.
