Navotas Representative Toby Tiangco, chairperson of the House Committee on Information and Communications Technology, is urging greater public awareness amid a rise in artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos and fraudulent online transactions.
Tiangco specifically cautioned the public to double-check transaction slips, following reports of bank transactions being falsified with AI technology.
Last week, banks including Bank of the Philippine Islands and BDO Unibank issued advisories reminding clients to verify their accounts when transacting online and to be wary of AI-generated screenshots of fake transactions.
“A reminder to our fellow citizens, including businesses: Do not easily believe transaction receipts being shown,” Tiangco said. “Double-check and validate them, because it’s now very easy to create fake slips using AI.”
Tiangco also highlighted the increasing prevalence of investment and romance scams that use AI tools to generate fake persons or voices. PLDT and Smart Communications recently posted an online video featuring seemingly real people talking, but clarified that the entire video was created using AI.
The lawmaker warned that individuals or businesses caught using AI technology for scams and fraudulent activities could face severe legal repercussions.
