Alex Eala advanced to the quarterfinal of the Eastbourne Open on Wednesday (Manila time) in Great Britain via walkover, 0-6, 6-2, 3-2, after Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia retired from the match due to an ankle injury.
Eala had the lead, 3-2, in the third set when Ostapenko, a 2017 French Open champion, conceded after twisting her ankle.
The 20-year-old Filipino tennis ace picked up her second win over the Latvian after her 7-6, 7-5, victory in the Round of 64 of the Miami Open last March.
The Rafael Nadal Academy graduate will face the winner between home bet Francesca Jones and Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine.
Eala is using this competition to prepare for the Wimbledon Championships on Monday, 30 June.
