Japan reinforced its growing defense ties with the Philippines during a reception held aboard the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel JS ISE on 23 June 2025, marking the 71st anniversary of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.

The diplomatic and military event was co-hosted by Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya and Rear Admiral Natsui Takashi, Commander of JMSDF Escort Flotilla 4, while the warship was docked at the Port of Manila.

Among the notable guests were National Security Adviser Eduardo Año and Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., who both highlighted the strengthening defense and security partnership between Japan and the Philippines.

In his welcome address, Ambassador Endo stressed the two nations’ shared identity as maritime countries with aligned strategic interests. He cited the recently approved Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) as a “milestone” in bilateral military cooperation, and said negotiations are ongoing for an Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA), as well as talks on a future Agreement on the Security of Information.

The event also featured an exhibit of Japanese defense companies and a spread of Japanese cuisine curated by the culinary team aboard JS ISE in collaboration with the chef from the ambassador’s residence.

Defense analysts have noted Japan's growing role as a key security partner for the Philippines in light of shared concerns over maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific.
