The Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) will be recognizing the contributions of coaches when it holds the San Miguel Corporation-Collegiate Press Corps (SMC-CPC) Awards Night at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas Center on 30 June.
Bannering the recipients of “Coaches of the Year” awards are University of the Philippines (UP) mentor Goldwin Monteverde and Mapua University strategist Randy Alcantara, who led their respective teams to men’s basketball titles.
Monteverde spearheaded the Fighting Maroons’ redemption tour when they edged powerhouse De La Salle University to win the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 title while Alcantara engineered the Cardinals first crown in 33 years when they emerged victorious in Season 100 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
In the women's side, National University (NU) redeemed itself in UAAP Season 87 after getting back at University of Santo Tomas, thanks to the mentorship of Aris Dimaunahan who was hailed as the UAAP Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.
The Lady Bulldogs also showed their might in UAAP women’s volleyball, paving the way for Sherwin Meneses to bag the Coach of the Year honor while Dante Alinsunurin, also of NU, emerged as winner of the coveted plum for leading the Bulldogs to a historic fifth straight title.
Also set to be recognize as top-performing coaches of the season that passed are Jerry Yee of College of Saint Benilde and Bryan Vitug of Arellano University.
Yee will be honored for leading the Lady Blazers to their fourth straight NCAA plum while Vitug bagged the plum for serving as architect of the Chiefs’ first ever title since joining the NCAA in 2009 following a sweep of Letran College in the best-of-three finals series.
