How much is a six-kilometer, 10-minute taxi ride in Metro Manila?
A taxi driver charged his two female passengers P1,260 for the short drive between Terminals 2 and 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City last week.
The passengers were shocked by the fare and the cabbie offered a discount of P160, according to the Philippine News Agency.
The women were able to record the incident with their phone camera and posted the video on social media. It went viral and reached Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, who immediately ordered the Land Transportation Office to revoke the cab driver’s license.
Dizon also ordered the cancellation of the taxi operator’s franchise not only for the unit involved but for his 15 other cabs, all of which were found to be operating with an expired franchise.
Meanwhile, a 39-year-old mom from England was a victim of overcharging at a local shopping mall.
Yaditi Kava went dining with her two daughters at the Queensmere Observatory Shopping Centre on 16 May, leaving her car at a multi-story parking building.
After two hours, Kava paid the parking fee by swiping her card on the payment machine and drove off.
The mom then received a message from her bank on her phone confirming her payment of £4,586 in parking fees, Daily Mail reports.
The figure shocked Kava, who thought the amount that flashed on the screen of the car park payment machine was only £4.50 as she was in a rush to drive home, according to the report.
Kava shared her story on mainstream and social media. Savills, operator of the mall, blamed the error on the faulty payment machine and promised Kava a refund.
